It depends on what sort of damage it sustained and where the damage to the cable is, but as a rule, I would avoid it.
Any sort of exposed metal which has the potential to move around inside a powered on electronic device, is a disaster waiting to happen. It could potentially bridge lines of electrical connectivity and cause more damage. I have seen MacBooks murdered by a single screw which wiggled loose and wreaked havoc on the board.
