Repair, disassembly, and troubleshooting information for the Xbox Series X, Microsoft's 4K gaming console. The Xbox Series X was released alongside its companion console, the Xbox Series S, on November 10th, 2020.

Xbox series X Randomly shutting down

Hello everyone,

My Xbox series X is randomly shutting down when playing games… I haven’t observed it having any issues downloading or streaming, only when playing both disk and digital games.

I followed all the basic recommendations for ventilation. That did nothing so I opened it… the thermal paste was terrible but after replacing it, and cleaning the console, there was no difference.

I’m about to start swapping parts, specifically the power supply to see if that resolved it. I’m also considering that it could be a fault on the SSD because occasionally, on restart, none of the games or anything will load. I also considered it may be something wrong with the main power rails to the CPU but that’s just a guess because I recall watching one get fixed once and being told a console could function without a phase of power but may fail under load.

Any thoughts? I would appreciate input as I can not find any post, article, or YouTube video suggesting a real cause and solution.

James,

I have same problem of my console shutting off while playing games. The console just turns off with no warning. There is no message saying the console has overheated. I keep it on the top of my desk in a very clean and well ventilated area and I dust it out routinely. It happens specifically with emulated games or games that were originally released for the Xbox One. The games that it happens with the most are EA games like Battlefield 1, Battlefield V, Titanfall 2. It also happens on old games like Splinter Cell Chaos Theory and Red Dead Redemption 1. Weirdly though it DOES NOT happen on much more demanding game like Hell Let Loose and Red Redemption 2. I have played dozens and dozens of hours of those games and Halo MCC with no shut offs.

I have looked through similar reddit posts and xbox support with similar issues and tried absolutely everything that was suggested (including what microsoft support reps said to do).

I have tried

-Complete console reset

-Plugging console directly into the outlet

-Changing power settings to no auto shutdown

-Changing outlets

-Cleaning console (had done professionally)

-Replacing thermal paste ( had done professionally, Console works just stills shuts down in same way)From what I can gather online it

I did end up replacing the power supply and it did not fix my problem, at this point I am out of ideas.

Maybe its your electric system cutting off the xbox? I would recommend you try this in an other home to see if its probably your home electricity or the xbox itself
