iMac 2007 24 inch changeable with the 20 inch?

Hi all,

So I have a dead iMac from 2007 (24 inches) and I'm getting a 20 inch one for free. Of course, the 24 inch screen is nicer, so can I put the 20 inch computer inside the 24 inch case and use the screen from the 24 inch?

Thanks in advance

Depending on the exact 20" model you might be in luck.

It's a 2007 model as well.

As you can see here the logic boards are very similar!

iMac Intel 20" EMC 2210 Logic Board

The layout is the same, I'm suspecting its doable. I personally haven't done it but it would be a fun exercise to try!

@danj which power supply would I use? Or would I use both? I'm assuming that the 20 inch power supply is less than the 24, but not compatible? I'm sure there would be lots of space either way

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@gaussymousy - You're just swapping the logic board correct? Thats all you should need to do.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@danj Yes but I still need a power supply right? Not sure if I can use the 24 inch imac's power supply in my 20 inch board.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@gaussymousy - I'm not sure I'm following you here. The 24" iMac power supply can be used.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@danj Ok so i've decided not to do the swap, but after I opened the 20 inch iMac, the cpu fan now goes on full blast. I've done all the resets, and checked the cables (Though for some reason if I power it up while the bezel is off, no fans) The fan goes to full about halfway through the apple logo. No fan control software is installed.

First you need to discern why the 24" is not working. Probably the power supply. Take a look at the diagnostic LEDs on the logic board and tell us what you see.

@mayer The optical drive makes the startup sound, but there are no other indications of life. As far as the LEDs go, the first three are on, but the last is not.

The 3 LED lights shows power supply and logic board are good. On this model your most likely failure is the video inverter.
