Why does the CD tray keep opening and closing?
It constantly closes and opens until I play a tape then it stops. Ive tried playing CDs and all it does is scratch it up

Hi,
If the CD discs are literally being scratched after being inserted into the CD player, it seems that something has broken or come loose inside the player mechanism, which is scratching the CD disc and also stopping the tray from fully loading the CD.
Here's the HCD-CP1 service manual for the unit which will help you to dis-assemble it to remove the CD player and to open it and check what has happened.
I realize that you said that it is a CMT-CP1 but the HCD-CP1 is the Amplifier, CD player, Tape Deck and Tuner section in the CMT-CP1 unit.
Hopefully this is of some help.

ill definitely check it out appreciate it
unfortunately the link to the service manual no longer works, there is a second possibility which i bielive is the problem with my unit and that is that the drive belts can stretch and loose elasticity over time as they do with tape decks on vintage appliances, these can still be bought online to replace but it is a bit fiddly and a guide would be handy
A bit convoluted maybe but here's some info that may help.
Here's the service manual for a Sony HCD-CP2 system.
This uses the same cd mechanism type i.e. Sony KSL-2130CCP/K1N as the HCD-CP1 system.
The system disassembly starts on p.9 and the cd mechanism layout is shown on p.50-51. The belt (Item #156 - part number 3-653-387-00 (examples only) is also shown on p.50
Unfortunately it doesn't show what the belt path is, so hopefully if it is only stretched you will see this (take pictures) before removing/replacing it
@jayeff thanks for the help, i had got as far as stripping down to oubricate the control cam as previously suggested but no further, this manual gives a bit more insight so if i do need to replace the belt it should be no more challenging than the rest of the strip down, just take your time and be careful with those ribbon cables. Maybe i can repair it after all!
Just thought i would update - the spare part worked and the manual/guide was helpful too and i have now restored my old Sony stereo to full working order, I'm quite chuffed to make my old tech work properly again, thanks for the assist
