Lightning is not a peer interface it is a Hub to Node interface. As such the main device is the hub to the other. Lightning follows the older USB interface protocol. It is not powerful enough to drive the XDR display.

The MacBook Thunderbolt (mDP interface) is the interface you need to use as it can supply the needed data throughput to drive the display.
