Samsung tablet on Android 4. Upgrade to Android v 5?

Hi I have a (pretty old) samsung tablet; its on v4 of Android - all updates are up to date. Several problems, mainly running very slow. I’ve deleted most of the apps (don’t use them), cleared cache etc. No difference. Any ideas? Might an upgrade to the Android version (say to 5 or 6) help? If so, how to do it please - anyone?
