iPad (1st gen) symptoms of battery dying

Having new issues with partner's iPad (1st gen) not holding a charge and taking very long to charge. The iPad is a replacement from Apple, I have no idea if it was a refurb or brand new - so I don't know the history of this device.

I have no problem replacing the battery (thanks to the great guides here), but have yet to find a clear description of symptoms for a failing iPad battery before spending the money on a new one.

I'm trying to clarify if he's got battery hardware issues or if it's some continued problem with iOS 5 that is causing these new problems. I cannot find a utility that shows a battery cycle count.

Just FYI, we are using the 10v charger base connected directly to a receptacle.

what symptoms do you have? crashing apps? have you also tried changing charging cords, checking charging ports?

It is taking excessively long 6+ hours to take a full charge. Discharges quickly.

There has also been an issue where APPs crash and go to a black screen. Pressing the home button returns you to the APP or the home screen.

After using a battery utility app to monitor usage we tracked it down to new iCloud services that became available with IOS 5. Tweaked some notification and push settings and it is exhibiting normal battery drain.
