What should I write to the old owner to unlock the iPhone?

I bought a job lot of broken iPhones on eBay. One of them was an iPhone 6S, I fixed it, and was greeted with a passwordless phone, but that is still connected to an Apple ID. As it has no password, I can see the email address of that account.

What should I send him to be credible and ask him to remove his account from the phone?

I already sent something with a link to Apple's support website, but I got no response…

“Hi there, I’ve received the device and was able to repair it, but have encountered a slight issue. In order for me to use this phone as my own, it first must be cleared from the Apple ID it was previously signed into via iCloud. This can be done remotely using the Apple ID and password this device is signed in to on your end to remove your account. Simply go to Settings on your current device, providing you are signed in using the same Apple ID as the device you sold me. Select this iPhone 6S from your devices list and tap “remove from account”. I have access to the email address associated with the Apple ID if that would help this process. In order to reset and activate the device for myself, this must happen first. I look forward to your reply and to solving this issue!”

Hopefully this is something like what you’re looking for? Feel free to use this directly; I can edit as you need too!!

Note that the seller isn't the old owner, I bought a job lot of iPhones, so he has no idea that his old phone has been sold...

@fauconspartiate

totally agree with Marcus’s comments, however, here are some things you might want to be wary of.

1) the email address you're sending to is inactive
2) the user has forgotten the password to the icloud account associated with the given email.
3) the previous owner isn't willing to assist you
4) the previous owner decides to report the phone as lost or stolen.

if any of these scenarios apply, then you’re stuck with a locked phone.
there are software and/or services out there that will offer to remove a previous owner’s icloud account for a fee. those either involve jailbreaking your phone (which is only a bypass, not a removal) or are a scam.
from what i’ve read the only (so called) reliable option (provided that the phone hasn’t been reported as lost of stolen) is folks on ebay or reddit who can make you a receipt which identifies you as the original purchaser and owner of the phone (by model and IMEI number). with that you can take it to the Apple Store and they can remove the icloud account.

if you do contact the owner, please post how it went.

good luck

I couldn't find anything on eBay or Fiverr, what are you searching to find these receipts?

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@fauconspartiate

the listing descriptions vary, but use some combination of the following.....

iphone

activation

icloud

lock

appleID

removal

service

A) search on ebay. do not visit websites that offer unlock the services.

B) ignore any listing mentioning jailbreaking, teamviewer, or requiring a pc or mac to execute the unlock

C) look for ones that first check if the IMIE is lost first and explain the process where they will send you a "document with a code" (in reality a receipt) with your name, ESN and IMEI on it (you provide them that information) for your "proof of purchase" to take into an Apple store.

the problem is even for the "good" listings, they come and go, the sellers change and the prices vary a lot. i've seem them as low as $20 and as high as $100, so you'll need to have patience in both finding then and waiting for a good price.

unfortunately i can't find any on ebay right now or i'd point you to one as an example.

@fauconspartiate

here's an expired listing. read through the description. that's describing the service that i was referring to. but you'll still need to wade through the listings to find the right one.
