Screen replacement: what adhesive, tape and gaskets to use?

I just replaced my Droid Bionic screen/digitizer using the teardown as a guide, and it worked mostly as described, but the teardown does not go as far as separating the screen from the frame.

I found that the screen is attached to the frame using some type of double-stick tape that was partially damaged when I separated them. What is this material and what is a good replacement for it?

There are also gasket like things around each opening in the glass that appear to be custom made for the screen. Any idea on where to get these parts?

Since there were no guides, I started a guide for this repair. I know the photos are not great, but hopefully it will help someone.

OK so I found double sided tape for touch screens.. Not sure what size we need for the bionic but here is where I saw it https://www.gounlock.com/browse.php?grou... There are several different options (5mm,3mm,etc) not sure if this will work but it is a start. Paul,

My fiancé just dropped her bionic and shattered her screen. I am now doing research to see if replacing the screen is something I am capable of. How difficult was the replacment? Did you have to use any of the special tools from the tear down. You mentioned a guide you wrote, but I don't see anything listed.

Chris, It was easier than I expected. I used the torx screw driver and a couple of the plastic tools. I wrote a guide, but apparently it needs to be approved before it is released. The teardown is probably all you need, but it stops short of separating the glass from the frame - hence the question. I ended up with dust between the glass and LCD, so once I figure out what to do with the adhesive, I'm going to go in again and clean it.

Is the original or replacement adhesive in the square shape like pictured http://www.cellulardr.com/verizon-droid-... or is it along the border of the frame in strips? I am trying to picture what the tape looks like. I don't plan on opening it up until my parts get here. I already purchased a roll of the 2mm tape on ebay, but I would be willing to buy the replacement adhesive if it is per-fitted or a square shape (different then using roll of the double sided 2mm.

After saving the gasket, do you feel comfortable reusing it without buying the replacement gasket? What did you use to separate the glass from the front housing?

Well, I replaced glass/touch screen successfully. I was actually able to save gaskets (in about 80% condition, but all in one piece) by using a hairdryer to heat up and loosen and a razor blade. Took me over 2hrs total...

There are 2 gaskets. A dust gasket that goes on screen, and an adhesive gasket that goes on faceplate to hold screen (screen actually ends up going in from front after detatching connectors).

Note that you need to separate back housing from mother board to disconnect cables and there is 2 sided tape holding together. Again, heating with hairdryer helps pull that apart without breaking anything.

If I were to do it again, I would buy new front housing which has screen adhesive tape installed + screen dust gasket + glass (parts would be about $120 before shipping)

I've read that Motorola will replace for $110, don't know if true. However, that voids warranty (you "dropped" it) and you'll be w/out phone for a while.

I used a electronic screw driver with a screw extracting bit and it safely/quickly removed the stripped screw.

Hi all,

I know this guide is quite old, but still I would like to present you my issue and see what your opinions are.

I replaced a broken screen on a Xperia SP. The replacemen screen brought a double tape to fix the screen to the device. The screen works perfect while it is separated from the device, but when I place the screen in its position using the tape to finish the work, the screen is not working in the 100% of its surface. In the 20% top does not detect fingers unless you do high pressure.

It turned out that the issue is the distance between the screen and the device. I used the tape twice to avoid this, but when the phone, for example goes into a pocket, or it is being under pressure, the screen gets close enough to not work properly again.

Maybe the tape is not the proper one and there is needed some kind of material that avoids any radiation, or temperature.

Any hints?
