Jenn Air JMV8208WB0 Humming when door is closed

Our microwave had this happen about a year ago, we would heat something up and randomly after it is finished and the timer beeps, the hum remains until we open the door. Then we would shut the door and it would hum. I read online it was something with the switches on the door, and slamming the door would fix it. It was true, I slammed the door and the humming stopped and the microwave worked fine for about 1 year. It happened earlier this year and it took me a few times of slamming the door to get it to stop. Just happened yesterday again and it took a LOT of force to slam the door over 10 times to get it to stop humming. Does this sound like a faulty door switch? Its an over the range unit, so there is some grease that finds its way in and around the door cavity that I clean regularly. Maybe grease is causing the door latches or contact points (if there are any) to get stuck?

Note: on this model there are only 2 switches, not 3 like most microwaves.

Hi @pathosmusic ,

It seems as though it may be a loose or faulty switch but the only way to really know is to test them, with an Ohmmeter.

Be safety aware when working in microwave ovens. The HV capacitor can store >5000V DC for months even if the power has been disconnected for this length of time. This amount of voltage can seriously injure you. The HV capacitor needs to be correctly discharged as soon as it can be accessed after removing the cover from the oven and before any further work is done in the oven. If you don’t know what you’re doing, then don’t do it! Contact a reputable, professional appliance repair service and ask for a quote.

I assume that you verified that there are only 2 switches as according to the Jenn Air JMV8208WB0 parts list (see p.3 & p.4 part # 8, 9 & 19), and these suppliers, there are 3 switches in the oven. supplier 1, supplier 2 , supplier 3 (click on Choose part type > switch)

As an aside, if you’re in the habit of opening the door whilst the oven is still operating to pause/stop it for whatever reason, if this method is used often, there is a chance that the door switch contacts will eventually weld shut (see image) due to the current arcing across the contacts when they’re opening. The arcing causes switch contact migration, because the power was still being applied through them when it shouldn’t be. If it is necessary to pause/stop the oven before the cooking time has elapsed, it is better to use the Control panel controls to do so and then open the door.
