“A” and “D” on keyboard not working after replaced trackpad

I spilled some water on my trackpad few weeks ago. I bought new trackpad from ifixit and swapped the old one out. Before I “repaired” it, my keyboard worked perfectly. But after the “repair”, no response when I click “A” and “D” on my keyboard, althought the backlight is working…

Please help… Thanks!

Hi, I just had this very same issue with a new 2020 M1 MacBook Air. Model A2337 EMC 3598. The problem is not your keyboard its an incompatible trackpad.

Customer of mine brought in an M1 MacBook Air with a cracked trackpad. Everything was working great no issues with the keyboard. When I replaced the trackpad all of the sudden the A & D keys wouldn’t work anymore. Putting the old cracked trackpad back on would fix the issue. The new trackpad I had would work on another 2020 MacBook Air Intel version but that Intel trackpad would cause the same issue on the M1 as the brand new trackpad so I was confused. This particular problem with the A & D keys is caused by using a trackpad from an Intel MacBook Air on an M1 MacBook Air and possibly the other way around as well. I purchased my trackpads off of a vendor that lists them being compatible with all 2020 MacBook Air (Mobile Sentrix) but they are not.

I use a local parts distributor that has this trackpad in stock if you are still looking for it. You will have to order the trackpad from your exact model MacBook which I am assuming is the M1.

@wongngaisum - I only discovered this:

Be aware, when replacing the Touchpad (Trackpad) with a different nationality keyboard fitted, the keyboard will need to be re-mapped before it will function properly.

This is a process that is tied into Apple's Global Service Exchange (GSX), so cannot be done by anyone without access to this service (generally only ASP can do this).

Because of this, you need to get the trackpad from the same country encoded keyboarded the system has.

So the bottomline is without knowing the source of the Touchpad (Trackpad) you are taking a gamble it will work. At least it can be fixed but it will need to be serviced by someone who has access the Apple's re-mapping tool (an ASP).

Wow! Thanks for the info. I do not see too many non english macs come through but I will definitely keep this in mind.

Thanks @xnriqux and @danj ! My keyboard language is US English. Can I use the trackpad from https://www.protechrestore.com/index.php... ? Also, it means that iFixit is selling trackpads not usable on M1 macbook air. Is it possible to ask for a refund and notify iFixit of this issue? Thank you!

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@wongngaisum I ordered that exact trackpad for my customers US English keyboard M1 and it worked perfectly without any modifications. As far as getting a refund through iFixit you would have to contact them about it.

Sounds like a bad keyboard the keys A & D share the same row line with S but they use different column lines! so Q & E should also be affected too, if not then the given keys are bad.

Contact iFixit for a new keyboard.

crwdns2944067:04crwdne2944067:0:

Thank you. But only A & D are affected (they were working fine) and changing trackpad should not affect keyboard. I am not sure if the problem lies in the keyboard or the trackpad cable (i used a new cable) or what else.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@wongngaisum - As you had a spill these keys got hit, it just took longer for the problem to surface.

Replacing the MacBook Air 13" (A2179, A2337 2020) Trackpad Cable cable won't fix this as the raw keyboard signals are being sent to the logic board. Think of it this way you have a spreadsheet with rows and columns if you lost a row or a column others in that row or column would be affected too! If Q and E are working that points to the keyboard its self.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

Thank you! but ifixit doesnt sell a2337 keyboard. Is there any place i can buy one?

Hi there,

I have a similar problem.

Water got on the trackpad and the keyboard.

Some keys do not work or show other keys that have been pressed, although this is not the case.

When a new replacement keyboard is connected, all keys work normally again - except for A and D! The trackpad works without problems with the defective original keyboard and also with the replacement keyboard.

Now the question is, is this a keyboard problem or a trackpad problem or even a motherboard problem?

The macbook works flawlessly except for the keyboard. There are no problems whatsoever with an externally connected keyboard.

Please help.

But on my macbook the trackpad is the original one. Its not changed. I connect only a new keyboard…and i have the problem with A and D keys.

Strange!!?

Any ideas?

I have A2337 Air with waterdamaged touchpad, replace it with touchpad from A2179 Air and got a problem A and D keys dont work. Replacing with A2337 touchpad SOLVE problem!!!

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

My guess is you will need to replace keyboard with a keyboard of the exact same model. M1 trackpads aren't compatible with Intel MacBooks and vice versa, im assuming its the same with the keyboards and also caused the A & D key issue.
