Is it possible to change the screen?

Or is it software locked like the iphone 12 screen?

The iPhone 12 screens aren’t exactly “software locked”. All you get is a warning message telling you the screen has been changed. It doesn’t inhibit the device’s functionality. Worse case scenario you’ll lose TrueTone without the use of a special programmer which I don’t believe exists for the iPads quite yet but we have one for the iPhones.
