Lenovo Y540 randomly turns the screen off.

my Lenovo Y540 randomly turns the screen off. The only way to get it to work again is to hold the power button to turn the computer off, and then power it on again.

The PC is turned on the entire time that the screen is black. While the screen is out, the power button is on, FN button on the keyboard is on, caps lock activates/deactivates etc. Everything indicates that the PC is running, but the screen randomly dies. Turning off the PC, and on again works 100% of the time.

I haven't been able to find a similar case to this, so I hope there's help out there!

I have tried the following:

Plug out the battery and hold the power button for 30 seconds
Reinstalling the PC with a fresh installation of Windows 10
Charged it all the way up to 100% power.

Hi @Tech Gen

You haven't mentioned if you tried what @jayeff suggested.

I've tried to reinstall drivers but issue remained, but I am 99% sure this is indeed nvidia driver problem as when I terminate nvidia processes on system tray everything is working, but after some time nvidia lunches automatically and then screen goes balck again. The reason might be also some win10 update which causes conflict with nvidia driver, but couldn't find any threads on other forums with similar issue. Apparently, this is not so common issue. The other posibility might be that after uninstalling nvidia drivers from system, it still keeps some files in the register that are causing the black screen issue. If You will manage to fix it. pelase let know. I wil also keep You posted if find a solution.

Hi,

Things to try:

Try connecting an external monitor (TV?) to the laptop’s HDMI port and check if its display goes black as well? Here’s the user manual. Go to p.18 & p.19 to see how to do this.

If the external monitor screens stays on, when the laptop’s screen goes black, try shining a torch at an angle close to the laptop screen and check if you can detect any images at all. They will be very faint so trying this in a darkened room may help to see them.

If you can detect images then there is a backlight problem with the display. Either in the display or the backlight power circuit to the display.

If the external monitor screen also goes black try getting into BIOS on startup and check if the laptop display stays on or not.

If it stays on then there may be a video driver problem. Have you checked that the video drivers are up to date?

If it also goes black it may be a GPU problem. Have you checked that both fans are working and that the air vents are clear and unobstructed? If necessary here’s the hardware maintenance manual for the laptop. Go to p.40 to view the necessary pre-requisite steps and then the procedure to remove the fans.

I've had problems like this with corrupted video drivers. Solution is to thoroughly uninstall driver and reinstall.
