Why does my Car gets stuck in second gear in the mornings?

Hi I have a 2002 jetta 1.8 Turbo. Every time as I take off to work in the mornings I warm up the car and as I am taking off around 20mph (second gear) it stay stuck and my engine will rev up to 5500 rpm. Then the gear kicks in. It will only do that in the mornings while the car is cold.

Hi,

as far as i understood, its an automatic gearbox. As you said, it will only happen in the morning, when the car is cold.

So i first of all, drive to a VW dealer and ask him to hook up the black box to the diagnostics. I would guess, that the gear box has an extra temperature sensor and somethings wrong there, or its a humidity problem, because there is condensed water on a contact or in a black box.

I've had a mechanic explain to me a common problem with VW automatic transmissions. It's really a questions of poor engineering sadly. From my understanding the the valve body, servo piston, and another part which sadly my brain can't remember are made of 3 different metals. The valve body is the weakest of the metals (aluminium) and over time ends up deforming causing the transmission to poorly handle gear changes. The common indication of this problem being a very sluggish change of gear and high RPM...

From what I gather it's become a common problem with well aged VWs automatics... Your only option is a new tranny :P

Its the transmission. The year you have falls into the autotragic range which were transmissions prone to failure.
