Will a cracked gas cap make it hard to start

My gas cap is cracked and there's no choke on my mower. Will this make it harder to start

My experience has been that it WILL start and run, but a cracked gas cap will decrease engine performance, fuel leakage, and cause poor gas mileage. Sometimes you will hear uneven engine noise as it surges and slightly dies back.
