I would take off one side of the headset to determine which cable is hooked up with which side. If you have a multimeter you can use continuity or diode mode to check which wire is which.

The same thing you can do with the jack connector.

The connection order for newer devices from the tip of the jack is;

  2. Right
  3. Ground
  4. Mic
