Vizio T.V. (model num E3D420VX) sometimes has black and white picture

Hello everyone!

I have a 42 inch Vizio TV (model number: E3D420VX). The issue at hand is that sometimes when I turn the TV on, it has a black and white picture. The TV plays whatever I’m watching (it also has sound when it does this) but just in black and white, no color. It goes back to normal after turning the TV off and then back on. It doesn’t do this on a regular basis though; it usually does it every now and then. the TV was purchased new in 2012 I believe around when it was first released. I think it may be worth knowing that this particular TV is mounted on the wall.

We are having the same problem. We kept the TV on for the past 6 months. Would go black and white if we changed the input or turned it off. Finally a power outage got us. BW only for a week now. If it's over 100 to fix might as well get a new tv🤦‍♀️. Sad to lose our 3D polar express😭

Hi @dagreat,

The following is just trying to narrow down what the problem may be.

What is the signal source for the TV? A direct connection from a TV antenna or perhaps a connection from a 'box' of some description, e.g. cable box, PVR etc.

If from a "box":

Try using different input types or different cables i.e. HDMI, Component video, composite video and check.

Try connecting a different signal source e.g. a dvd player to the TV and check.

This is in case the “box” or the connecting cables are the problem and not the TV.

If from an antenna:

Try rescanning for all the channels again and check.

The signal source is from a streaming stick (an amazon firestick to be specific). I want to thank you for your help in this matter. I'm not the primary user of the tv but it is going to be given to me soon so I will be sure to try everything you mentioned and will report back to you with what I find.

I have been having the same problems almost all of 2021. My VizioTV has all the colors for the pre-installed apps Icons showing up in bright beautiful colors. I am using the ROKU streaming sticks on my TVs.

I have moved the ROKU sticks from TV to TV and they work perfectly except on my big Vizio mounted to the wall. I have moved the ROKU stick to each of the HDMI (1-4) and it hasn't changed anything.

Every few days I could turn the TV back on and the color would be great or I would tweak it in the settings for Picture. IF I left it on and let it go to screensaver VS turning it off... it would stay in color. But I accidentally turned the TV OFF and now the color has failed to come back for well over a month.

Once again. all my apps are in color, but once I stream a preview/ trailer for a show/movie... it comes in B&W. I am at a loss.

@shoshee525 - I got same issue with 10y old M3D420SR, yesterday it still had color during 1 out of 10 powerdown-unplug-powerup cycles, today 0 out of 50 so far (with 1-10min wait inbetween). The issue is - no company produces 3D TVs anymore (throughout last 5 years) and I'm using the 3D feature of it quite extensively. All menus are shown in color - it just "interprets" HDMI signal as color-less (from any HDMI source/cable). I will try the leftover stocks of replacement boards for it to see if that helps...

My tv is in black and white as well. It turned off and when I turned back on it was in black and white. Had happened a couple of times. Usually after about 5 days it will go back to color. It’s really annoying.

There are many repair services capable of fixing this (I had to use one because I need my 3D TV and there are none produced anymore).

I went for the one advertised on eBay for MY model/mainboard (https://www.ebay.com/itm/232696214137), if your model# differs - look for same listing for a different board#, or you could do it directly via (https://www.nickstvs.com/). Took less than 2 weeks, costed about $110 (incl. shipping) and works fine for over a year

@tonyaschlebach what exact model is your TV? This could be an issue with the main board or with the T-con board. It'll depend on the model to see if your TV has a separate T-con board or if it is integrated to the main board.
