Static mats and strap

Im in the process of ordering the parts i need for my repair. While i wait for certain items to come back into stock i was wondering whether or not a anti static mat is neccesary? I will be getting the wrist strap, but for a one of repair could i use something foud in the home instead of the mat?

You can do your work on a metal surface, to which you can clip your wrist strap (clip to an unpainted part of the metal, to make a good electrical contact). That will keep all parts at the same voltage, so there is no static to worry about. Anti static mats, especially the good ones from 3M, can cost you $80 or more, depending on their size. Cheaper ones are available, but don’t do as good of a job. Good luck with your repair.
