In June 2017 Apple updated its 13" MacBook Air with a newer Broadwell Intel Core i5 processor, resulting in slightly increased performance and battery life.

Burnt capacitor on motherboard

My MacBook Air 2017 wouldn’t turn on, I could smell burning. Took the back off to find a burnt capacitor. Can’t seem to find them online to buy. NEb AV7

Hi @steve70870

Highly believe it is a same value tantalum capacitor in parallel

AV7

TEPSLB21A626MHF8R

To confirm, just to check the laptop schematics

check on the FET if it is shorted too.

Thank you to everyone that helped with my problem. i have since replaced the capacitor. once replacing that, the mac was brought back to life. Although whatever the cause of this the battery had gone too. it only had 100cycles, but wouldn’t charge. i was thinking maybe there was another problem on the motherboard, but i took the risk and ordered and new battery, which came today. Replaced it, and all it as it should be again. Thanks once again all. Take care and stay safe.

Telling us which motherboard model it is (820-XXXX) would allow us to give you a definitive answer. However, these are common capacitors on mac boards. The Code is NEb AV7. N represents the voltage (11V), Eb represents the manufacturing date code (not important) and AV7 represents the capacitance, in this case 62uF.

This is not a standard, off the shelf component, as Apple has probably had them custom designed to their specifications. Look up the part number Augustine suggested and you should be able to order them online from Chinese vendors. Or you could purchase a donor board and transplant the component.

@steve70870 as my colleague @refectio pointed out already, the capacitor you need is a 62UF 11V 20% Tant(alum)-Poly(mer) capacitor in a Case B2S-1 package. This particular model is a capacitor made by NEC/Tokin.
