In June 2017 Apple updated its 13" MacBook Air with a newer Broadwell Intel Core i5 processor, resulting in slightly increased performance and battery life.

Why does my MacBook Air not charge?

Hi there, I have a MacBook Air which is not willing to charge.

The MagSafe 2 charger does not light up - it stays off no matter what. I have tried with multiple different chargers which all yield the same result.

The MacBook Air does not charge, however I can use it as long as I keep the power adapter connected to it.

I tried doing a SMC-reset.

Any suggestions as what to look into?

Hi @danj

I have uploaded a screenshot as per your request. Even though the charger is connected the battery does not charge.

Ouch! Not good ;-{

Clearly we can see the charging logic on your logic board has failed. A common cause is using knockoff chargers

But at this point you will also need to get the logic board fixed or replace it as well. Where do you live? Country and nearest city?

Oh man!

Are there any way to test if a new logic board would make a difference?

I live in Demark, Copenhagen.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@Kasper Jensen - The clue is the 0 Watts and Connected besides the charge state of the battery of 6728 and the health as still quite high at 94%

So that aims us to the logic board charging logic. Sadly we don't have a repair pro listed in Copenhagen, you'll need to ask a few friends and look through web listings for repair shops. They need to be able to do micro-soldering. The other direction is to just replace the logic board on your own is not overly difficult if you feel up to it.

Either way will work!

I have a very similar problem, just since my battery is completely depleted I cannot do any sysyem or hardware checks. My first thought is to test the charger with a voltmeter but I am unsure how to do...what pins to test and what I readings I need to see. Any input would be great!

@sufaia - What is the color of your MagSafe LED? Amber or Green?

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

Hello Dan,

Thanks for the replj.

I do not get any of the usual lights on the MagSafe.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

Clean the MagSafe connector pins. If doesn’t work you’ll need to replace the I/O board and cable. Review this guide MacBook Air 13" Early 2017 I/O Board Replacement

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

Thank you! Can I clean the pins with alcohol or?? Should I test, the MagSafe before digging into the r&r of the I/O board. How might I test the MagSafe? Voltmeter?

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@surfalia - Yes, use Iso alcohol with a cotton swab to clean the surfaces of dirt. Make sure your port looks like the images I posted in your post about.

I use a second known good MagSafe to do my testing. If I suspect the MagSafe as being bad because its in disrepair (cord or pins are damaged or the case has been opened I don't bother in testing it as the MagSafe can damage the MacBook! To add to it I also look for signs the charger is a knockoff:

I only use a REAL Apple unit bought directly from Apple as 90% sold online or non-Apple stores are knockoffs!
