How do I make a startup USB drive?

I was given a Macbook Pro mid2009 15” with fractured LCD supports near the base. Still works though, I propped up the display on a jury rigged plastic jig. It has Yosemite OS. How do I make a startup USB thumb drive for it?

When you hear the startup chime, press and hold the Option key. Holding that key gives you access to Startup Manager. Once the Startup Manager screen appears, release the Option key. The utility will look for any available drives that include bootable content.

Thanks, I know about the option key thing. What I'm looking for is a way to create an external boot/startup thumb drive.

Easy way use this free program https://diskmakerx.com/, from another working mac you can create it, the only thing that you need is a macOS installer that you can search online for it, due that is old may you will have a hard time.
