Ice/frost on interior back wall

Hello everyone,

I purchased a new Bosch fridge freezer and it is around 1 week old. Within the first day of turning it on there has been a build up of a thin layer of frost on the interior back wall (just in the middle, never at the top or bottom). Sometimes it melts and leaves droplets of water and then sometimes it becomes ice. This occurs every day.

I had a Bosch engineer look at it but they claimed that this is normal and all fridges work in this way today. But I'm a bit skeptical.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you

What is the temperature in the compartment?

Are there any fruit or vegetables stored on the shelves rather than in the crispers? Only ask as they give off vapours which may condense on the walls and then freeze which would happen if the compartment was too cold. Ice only forms at 0 deg.C and the refrigerator should be at 3-5 deg. C.

What is the model number of the refrigerator?

The temp of the fridge compartment is 6 C. The model number of the fridge is KGE49VI4AG. We do keep some veg on the shelves but it's not that much.

How humid is it where you are?

If the humidity is high the humid air entering the refrigerator when the door is open will also condense on the coldest sections. The user manual mentions that near the rear panel is the coldest section of the compartment and is where meat etc should be placed

Is there an air vent near where you say the ice is forming? The user manual doesn’t go into that kind of detail.

If so this is where the cold air is entering the refrigerator from the freezer compartment to cool the refrigerator compartment down so naturally it will be colder there than the rest of the compartment as the air has to distribute throughout to even the temp.

If it is not humid then I can only suggest that you place the vegetables in the crispers and check the result.

I have the same problem with my F&P refrigerator when I store excess fresh fruit in the refrigerator on the shelves - I have a mandarin tree, to keep it good for a bit longer. There is ice forming near the air vents that feed into the compartment. It is the fruit giving off vapour which condenses, then freezes

The ice melts when the auto defrost cycle kicks in because this is when the compressor and evaporator fan are both turned off for about 20 minutes so no cold air is being distributed throughout the compartments so the temp rises a bit. The defrost cycle occurs once every 8-11 hours (manufacturer dependent). This is normal.

When I don't have any extra fruit and can store everything in the crispers, i.e. vegetables and fruit, then I don't have a problem.

It is very humid however it has only been like this the last few days. Regarding the fruit and veg, the fridge started building up frost since the first day we turned it on when it had nothing in it.

The frost- ice builds up during the day but over night it melts and the next day it keeps repeating. Other than this the fridge seems to be working fine.

So I wondering if the frost build up that occurs everyday is normal with new fridges not taking into account the factors you mentioned?

It does take a little while for a new fridge to get properly cold. By this I mean that even though the air temp in the compartments is correct, the walls etc have to also cool down and this takes longer. Usually only 24-48 hours though.

The only other thing that I can think of is maybe the door seals aren't sealing properly, but then you would think that the temps would be a bit warmer or that the compressor would be running continually, trying to maintain the set temp.

Frost build up is normal on the evaporator unit, which is hidden behind a panel in the freezer compartment so it won't be seen. The auto defrost cycle which occurs once every 8-11 hours (manufacturer dependent so I don't know how often it occur with Bosch) melts this so it doesn't build up and cause problems.

You can test the door seals by placing a piece of paper between the door and the cabinet. It should pull out with a bit of an effort but not that easily and it should definitely not just fall out by itself. Try this at various places around the door, top, bottom and both sides.

It is also strange that it doesn't happen at night. To me this indicates that it is the humidity as no doubt the door is not opened that often if at all for several hours so no warm moist air enters.

You can only check to see if it is the same on less humid days
