Half the screen dark but not black (UN75MU6300FXZC)

I just moved this to my house.

This TV was working 100% when we went to see it. We wrapped it in two moving blankets and padded it with couch cushions and moved it to our house - a 20 minute drive with minimal bumps. I deal with moving computer monitors frequently, so I was very gentle moving it into my house and mounting it.

Now half the screen is very dark. There are some mild horizontal lines and ghosting of the image as well. White things appear about 90% as expected, but mid-level to black-level parts of the image look as if someone turned the contrast up to 500%. It seems like I have the first three problems of this video.

There was one potential pressure point on the top of the TV where a strap was resting on it, but I really didn’t think it was too tight. I might have been wrong about that. If there was a pressure point up top, what issue could that create?

Any ideas?

Hey @jbarx19. Did you ever get to the bottom of this? The picture you posted showing your issue is exactly what mine looks like too. I have a UN75JU641DFXZA. The only difference is that I have a subcon PCB board in between my main board and the T-Con board. I tested the LED backlights-no prob with them. I replaced the T-Con board-no resolve there. I swapped/cleaned the ribbon cables from the T-con board to the TAB boards-no resolve either. Also seems unlikely that both right side TAB boards would go out simultaneously. Thoughts?

Had a local company quote on replacing the screen after trying everything I could find online. They said it would be $1200. Ended up just selling the TV for $100.

We have a samsung 85 inch and sure enough right at about 14 months the lower half of the screen was darker than the top.  I was ready to bite the bullet and get a new TV and i saw this on youtube so i tried it and it worked! yay . . . so happy i don't have to spent another thousand dollars    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-y5pt06...     if you don't watch the youtube just slap the back of your tv until it's fixed hahaha (that's what i did) i did have to find the right spot it only took 1 minute

Hi @jbarx19 ,

Try testing that all the LED backlights are coming on the same if only to eliminate them as a problem.

Turn off the TV (if on) and then disconnect the power from the TV.

Disconnect the cable between the power board and the mainboard.

Reconnect the power to the TV and turn on the TV.

The LED backlights should come on and stay on and they should all have the same intensity.

If not then there is a problem with the backlight array power feed somewhere, power board, cable or LED array.

If they do then at least they have been eliminated.

There are tab connectors along the top of the TV that connect the tcon board to the LCD panel. These connections are very fragile but usually when they disconnect from the panel there are vertical black lines not just a darkening and also not over such a wide area. The TAB connector boards can be seen in the image that you posted where the 4 flex cables from the tcon board connect to them. Try cleaning and reseating the contact ends of the 2 flex cables, (both ends) that go from the tcon to the TABs on the side where the dimming is, just in case they have come loose during transit etc

Thanks for the suggestion, @jayeff.

Backlight is nice and even across the panel. I cleaned the contacts on all flex cables, but the issue persists. I even swapped the bottom (my LED panels connect on the bottom of the TV) flex cable pairs to the other side to eliminate that as well when I noticed they had the same part number. Any other thoughts?

Hi @jbarx19

Check if it also occurs when viewing the menu screens.

If it is still there then it is either the tcon board or the cables to the TAB board which connects to the panel. Since you've cleaned them and swapped them, if it is not the tcon board, it may the cable connectors on the TAB board (which would be strange for both of them to go) or the TAB board may have a problem. Maybe check it with a magnifying glass around the area of where the 2 cables connect to as it seems that since it affects the whole half that it must be near to where the cables both connect. Check for any damage, maybe slight cracks in the board etc

If the menu screens are OK then it is either the mainboard or the cable/cable connection between the mainboard and the tcon board

You did say that the strap "pressure point" was on the other side of the TV opposite to where the cables connect to the TAB board? So no pressure was placed on that side of the TV?

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

Thanks for the feedback, @jayeff!

The menus are also affected. I would agree that it’s something on the TAB board after reading a ton of posts. It’s tough with them on the bottom of the TV. I figured it would be safest to move it on its bottom, so we padded it and didn’t move it on its back. But I assume the issue might have been a bump on the bottom or something on the drive over.

You’re correct. The strap went over the top edge of the TV, and it was very mildly tightened.

I’ll take a very close look at the TAB board on the damaged side to see if I can find anything. Are you aware of how I could run a test on the TV and have it tell me the parts with issues or no?

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@jayeff, I just inspected the TAB boards, removed the connecting flex cable between the two, and I can’t find anything visibly wrong about it. I’ve also looked at the bottom on the TV’s frame, and I can’t find any obvious points of impact or pressure that would give me an idea of where the damage might be.

Any other suggestions? I don’t want to quit, but this is certainly testing me!

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@jbarx19

Since you can't spot anything and since you have swapped the cables I guess that perhaps to eliminate that it may be a tcon problem, is that you see if you can source a replacement board from a supplier with a no questions asked returns policy or at least one with a low re-stocking fee.

Other than that I know of no publicly available test program etc that would help. Samsung might have one but I don't know whether they do or not

Another thought that just occurred is that there must be a return path for the signals being fed down from the Tab connectors to the screen. Electrical signals don't just go to nothing so I'm wondering what is at the other end of the screen and each connection to the screen is a single line of colour, all of the 1920 lines. Do the lines of pixel components connect to something there, even if it is an earth connection etc or do they connect back to somewhere else??

I've never bothered about the other side of the screen away from the Tabs and that is where the pressure was applied. This may be just fantasizing on my part though.

It is most likely the COF driver chips on the side of the Lcd panel. To confirm that you have to disassemble the actual lcd frame. There is 4 cof chips on each side.Check the ones on the dark side of the screen with magnifying glass and one of them would be visualy burned.I had the same problem with my samsung tv and i have temporary fixed it by removing all 4 on the dark side of the lcd.The tv worked like that with good picture for about a year after that.only downside was with the 3d function of the tv,the picture looked like every other row of pixels were missing.to remove the cof chips you need to gently heat the lcd with hear dryer and just peel them off ,they are bonded with dual sided thermal tape to the lcd.TRY THIS ON YOUR OWN RISK IT WORKED FOR ME BUT I DONT WANT TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE.

PS

i have seen its an old tread and you may not have the tv any more but it may help others
