Repair guides and disassembly information for Microsoft's third-gen Surface Laptop, released in October of 2019.

Which screwdriver do I need to open the Laptop?

I’m trying to do an SSD Upgrade on my Surface Laptop 3, but I can’t figure out what screwdriver I need to open the Laptop.

I’ve seen various guides suggest various bits, like the Torx T4 & T5, but these don’t seem to have worked for me. Microsoft’s official SSD Upgrade guide suggests a Torx Plus IP5, but I can’t seem to find this anywhere.

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Hi @agill98 ,

Searching online for a Torx Plus IP5 screwdriver shows lots of suppliers.

Thanks @jayeff ! Out of curiosity, is this something that's included in an iFixit tool kit?

@agill98 ,

A quick look through the toolkits offered by ifixit doesn't show any Torx Plus drivers only Torx and Torx Security drivers, but I might have missed it ;-).

Although the ifixit Surface laptop 3 teardown guide video, features an ad from ifixit to use one of their toolkits so maybe a standard T5 would suffice, I don't know

This link shows the differences between the different Torx designs (see screw drive type panel,right side of page).
