The Dell Precision 5510 is a mobile workstation laptop released by Dell in 2015 as part of its Precision line of mobile workstations.

Where are the cpu and the gpu located? I need to re apply heat paste.

I recently bought a used Dell 5510 and it worked fine for the first couple weeks and suddenly it started getting hot below the top edge of the touchpad. I took the battery out and ordered a new one thinking that must be the problem. It was not, as it still was getting hot, too hot to rest your palm on it when typing. The seller recommended replacing the thermal paste on both the cpu, and the gpu, but I’m not positive where they are located.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi @theegeneral ,

Here’s the owner manual for the laptop.

Go to p.14 onwards to view the necessary pre-requisite steps and then the procedures to remove/replace the fans and heat sink.

You will find the CPU/GPU under the heat sinks.

Under the top edge of the track-pad is the memory. Top right can also be storage. The heat sink is at the top section of the keyboard. Since you replaced the battery, I will assume you know how to take apart the laptop. To change the thermal paste, you need to remove the heat sink. This part is the large black part in the center of the board. The best way to see whats getting hot is by opening the laptop in a L shape form, laying the laptop on screen with the bottom facing you and feeling different areas for heat but this is dangerous because you can damage the laptop if you touch something you shouldn’t. But you can change the paste first and see if that makes a difference. Just make sure you disconnect the battery before doing so.
