Powers up, but shuts down after 5 seconds

Here’s what happens: I hit the power button, and it fires up right away with the fan at full blast, but nothing ever comes on the screen and none of the LED’s on the front light up. After about 5-7 seconds of fan noise only, it shuts down. Here’s what I’ve tried:

  • Hold power button down for 30 seconds, with and without the battery in.
  • Start it without the battery in, charger only
  • Reseat the RAM
  • Stripped it all down and replaced (resoldered) in a replacement CMOS battery, exact replacement part. The old one seemed to be dead.
  • Tried to run it on an external monitor
  • Tested power cable, it’s outputting voltage as it should.

So all of the above fixes were tried, and the exact same thing happens, no matter what I do. With the charger plugged in, I’d expect the LED status lights on the front to light up at some point, or while it’s booting, but nothing. There is no reset button on this model.

Any ideas?

Try removing nonessential hardware such as CD drive and HDD. Also disconnect keyboard and touchpad. Do these one at a time until you have them all disabled then if it boots try connecting them one at a time to find the fault. If this doesn't work I do believe you have a processor power routing issue.

Ok, so I tried different removals like you suggested. It powered up when the keyboard was disconnected. The fan ran at a normal speed, the Toshiba splash screen came up, but then it said something like RTC battery low, press F2 to setup. The RTC battery read about 3.2 volts, so I don't think it's low. The other weird thing is that the power LED comes on when the laptop is off but plugged in. If the keyboard is hooked up, that LED is not on, and it boots up to a dead screen and roaring fan, then powers off right away.

So I'm pretty sure it's the keyboard then? I didn't try it without the CD drive or HDD - I just stopped when I found this.

Yup looks like the keyboard has a voltage problem. Needs to be replaced.
