My hoover dual power max will only suck up water with upholstery tool

I have only had it for a year, usually works great. Recently got it out to clean the carpets and it wont suck up water. Thoroughly clean the unit and checked all hoses and filters to no avail. However, I put on the upholstery attachment and it works like a dream. But I cannot do all my carpet with that, it would take forever. Any ideas?

In some of these units, there’s a dial that switches a valve essentially. Do you have that set in the right position?
