My NV642 has lost suction and makes a loud rattling noise. The upper canister part is still working. What is the issue?

A vacuum cleaner may lose suction for many reasons, but in most of the cased, loud noise is created for severe clog at the hose. It is also a reason for less suction. That's why I am primarily suspecting that maybe there is a clog.

You should try to fix that. To do so, you can follow the steps mentioned in the refered website.

It is simple to remove a clog in the hose. My 5 year old Shark Rotator was shutting off after 5 minutes on carpet. When I used the hand wand only, the suction was fine. I pulled out the long stick wand, and I was left with 18 inches of hose to clean. The ridges on that rubber hose catch hair, paper, and hard debris that will not get sucked smoothly. Use a wire, dowel or plumbers snake to dislodge the clog. I wish I could post a photo or the massive clog that I pulled out.
