New battery charges but just makes fan run when turned on

17” PowerBook g4 with mod A1057 battery. Have run with power adapter for years with dead battery. Installed “refurbished “ battery which charged with PowerBook off but when I push the power button all that happens is the internal fan runs . This has occurred with two different batteries. Would like the portability returned.

Update (11/22/2019)

It has worked for years off the power adapter and still does. Wanting portability I purchased two batteries and they both do the same thing . I have reset the pmu and pram. For a few moments it ran on the battery once almost long enough to set the time and date, but then black screen. I noticed that the power adapter was blinking back and forth between green and orange for a moment if that means anything. I don’t know it there is a reset button anywhere.

I am wondering if there is any battery management on the battery itself or just in the computer, so I don’t know it the batteries are defective and I should return them or there is something amiss in the laptop.

Sounds more likely your PowerBooks logic board has a problem here.
