Device not working after battery change

Just changed the battery in an iPod that was not responding and would not charge. Since making the change the iPod will transiently respond to pressing the keys by showing the Apple logo and the hard drive spins, then clicks. However, the battery will not charge and when connected to a PC, Windows 10 states it does not recognize the device. Device is not recognized by iTunes. Device content is not important to preserve. Any recommendations on how to proceed are appreciated.

Steven Helf  If this is truly a 3rd gen iPod than you need to try to charge through a Firewire charger. The 3rd gen does sync through USB but does not charge. this could also be the reason why your Windows machine does not recognize the iPod.
