Sudden black screen and no more power on/off response

While doing web activity the unit display went 'black' with a AC power adapter attached. Tried to shut down/restart...still black screen. Notice while holding power on/off button down the LED would remain 'on' only while the button was being held down. There were no start up chimes doing any of these attempts. What recommendations are recommended next?

MagSafe light is 'green'...in the past the battery charged 'normal' without any observed issues. FYI the MacBook Pro (13) is about 18 months old with light usage.

What color is the light on the MagSafe adapter? Have you been having any problems with your battery?

The recommended procedure unfortunately did not work. Once I completed the procedure and selected the Power On/Off button the second time the LED light flashed briefly and when out. Is there another step to follow. I am assuming the reset of the SMC may do to a corruption of the SMC? There is no response what so ever to the Power button with the Shift-Ctrl-Option sequence.
