My iMac gets stuck on the start up screen!

I acquired a non-functional iMac G5 17" 1.9GHz, Model A1144. It doesn't boot up, but I have managed to get an error code which says: 'disk0s3: I/O error'. Does this mean I need to get a new hard drive and will I have to install a new OSX?

Start up from your system installation disk by inserting the disk and holding down the "C" key. Go to the second screen pull down menu to Utilities > Disk Utility. Format the drive using the "write zeros" option. Quit Utilities and continue installing the system. Let us know if this works or what else happens. Thanks

Thanks for your quick reply I will try this, but it will probably be about 2 weeks 'til I get around to this.
