oil leak from water pump

I have a oil leak coming out of the drain tube from water pump ,thinking it may be coming through seal around water pump shaft , there is no sign of coolant in engine oil this on a Brute force 650 4x4i , 2006

It sounds highly likely that you are correct on the bad seal or gasket (not limited to the water pump shaft). If the oil pressure is higher than the coolant pressure that would explain no coolant in the oil.

There is a cavity between the oil pump side and the water pump side of that system this is where the weep hose connects. If the weep hole hose is restricted pressure can build in that cavity. The idea that oil pressure is higher than coolant pressure could be valid when it's running, but when you shut the engine off coolant pressure remains and oil pressure goes away. This is the reason why they put the weep holes in to keep coolant from getting into the oil. If you have oil dripping out of that weep hole you have an oil seal leaking from your oil pump. If you have coolant dripping from the weep hole you have a coolant seal. They share a common shaft and there's a bearing between the oil seal and the pump.
