boot to the OS CD and when you get to the window where it asks which drive to install it on, click the option button (lower left i beleive) and select Archive and Install. This will save your files and reinstall all critical OS files. If this does not repair it, you will need to back up your files and reinstall the operating system completely. If you have another mac handy, target disk mode works great to back up your files.

If you dont have nothing important on your computer,

1-» Play ubuntu live cd and save the important files in a USB flash drive ( during the boot screen click F9 or F10 or F11 to select the first boot as Cd-Rom)

2-» Install new copy of the OS
