I have no sound after the boot chime :(

Apple iMac "Core i5" 2.66 27-Inch (Late 2009) Specs

Identifiers: Late 2009 - MB953LL/A - iMac11,1 - A1312 - 2374

boots and runs snow leopard , lion and mountain lion without problems , but all without any sound

only sound device choice = Digital Out it seems to default to Selected sound output device

when that is the same as Pram reset <alt-command-P-R> , then i did :(
