After replacing screen camera app now stuck on shutter?

Hi,

I replaced a smashed screen for a customer, and after I put it back together, the camera app is now stuck on the shutter. Could I have damaged the front or rear camera or connectors? I have checked the connections many times, but no luck. I've also rebooted the phone, etc.

Thanks,

Graham

It sounds like the camera is not initializing, so (assuming you have everything connected properly) damage of some sort is the most likely cause. Now, if only I had a solution for you...lol.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

Have you had any luck with this? I have the same problem

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

I have the same problem... I have fixed like 50 iphone 4, and I have had this problem with 3 or 4.. I don't know why this happen

I have had this problem in iPhones with jailbreak and without it. I don't know if its software or hardware..

What I have checked is that the front camera works on other iPhone.. maybe something gets break when assembling in the logic board or something is not right connected

I should have try to insert another logic board on that iPhone, I will try this next time, but I have read that people with this problem have tried to check and change between them without success

I get very frustrated when this happens

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

any solutions on this? this is the 3rd time this happened to me. ive done hundreds of iphone 4 screen replacements. and every time i do it on conversion to a diff color screen. the front camera always have some issue.

The problem is a tiny jumper that gets damaged or falls off during disassembly. It's just above the 3rd-from-the-right ribbon connector to the logic board on the iPhone 4. If it's missing, the front camera won't initialize and will lock the shutter for both cameras. I found the answer and a picture of it on gsmindia.com. I used a circuit writer pen from Radio Shack to jump it, and all was well again.

Hey don, I bought the circuit writer and did exactly as you said. The pen says to allow it to dry after 24 hours. Is that only when it will work, once it dries?

crwdns2934285:0crwdne2934285:0

Hello all, I've replaced multiple iPhone 3 and 4 screens myself and have recently found that iPhone 4 ones sometimes present the mentioned problem. If you have found that the link has NOT fallen off when compared to another iPhone, then you may want to try this.

Don't shun this method straight away. Most of you will look at it and think it's just a normal reset but I found it works where even a full hard reset has not.

Make sure the iPhone is connected to a Mains Supply Charger. This is important.

Turn off the iPhone.

Once it is switched off, keep hold of the Home Button.

After 10 seconds of holding, power it up using the Standby button (no need to hold the standby button BUT KEEP HOLDING the Home Button).

Keep holding the Home Button until the iPhone has shown the Homescreen and only once it asks you to 'Slide to Unlock' will you let go.

This has worked for me on 5 occasions now so it is definitely worth a go. It's mainly for the people with the experience in this to know that they have done everything with great caution and have not snapped/forced/torn etc any components or their counterparts.

Thank you.

:)

Hey guys I tried that method that was mentioned on the gsm india forum and it worked! I just used solder to make the connection instead of the recommended circuit pen. Here is the image of the section you should solder if you are having camera problems. I don't take responsibility for your @$!$ ups though. The rear cam will work fine but when you switch to the front it locks the shutter, third party apps that only use the rear cam won't tell the whole story..

Its not the cams the software or the firmware.

The issue lies on the logic board as stated in my earlier post.. check it out ..

This issue has already been resolved. 90% of the time the jumper cable connection mentioned by Don L in the first answer is the solution. I have come across this issue many times.

It is NOT a software issue. and most of the time it is NOT a camera issue. Replacing the camera will rarely VERY rarely help.

okay im having the same issue for the most part i went and switched the frame on my iphone 4 two weeks ago to a gloss black(it came out so sexy) and everything worked great except for the rear camera the front camera works cause i can face time people and they see me and stuff but as soon as i switch to the rear it drops the call or if i try and open the camera app the shutter wont open or it will just be black ive already replaced the camera restarted the phone 10 million times and did a full restore you think it could be a ground issue?

Update

I tried the reset settings stuff and even restored my phone put a new camera in and still nothing. So now what could it be the front camera works if I FaceTime someone they can see me I don't get it?

crwdns2934285:0crwdne2934285:0

This has happened to me before and it is a software issue.

step 1:

Go to settings

step 2:

Go to general

Step 3:

Go to reset

Step 4:

Reset all setting

This should make the shutter go back to normal but if you try to switch it back from the front camera to the back or vise versa then the shutter will freeze again. Thus its a software issue.

have had the stuck shutter (rear, can't access front) randomly happen to me as well occasionally after a screen replacement. It seems to occur with verizon phones in my case (not sure if this is coincidence or correlation). Tried with new rear facing camera, reseating down to the logic board, hard/soft reset (software), full restore, and nothing resolves this problem.

Any other ideas?

didn't know if it was a hardware or a software issue, so I installed a camera app, and now the rear camera works fine. so not a hardware issue. unfortunately, the app doesn't allow me to switch to front camera, but im guessing it would work.

only problem is, I now lnow its a software issue, but can't seem to find a way to fix it :( its running the latest firmware, and i've also done a reset. all to no avail.

I just read the the footer and mine wasn't software it was damage after my husband changed the screen. I could reset it and like you say when you tried to alternate the cameras they froze. I tried all the restores through iTunes and got no where. I was assured by iPhone repairs direct that it was a hardware problem caused by damage when taking the phone apart and although I was sceptical they did fix it - permanently :)

I just looked up the number and its 01924 262112 - don't think they will mind me writing it here - they were very helpful

I have the same issue as above. For technical reasons, here are my steps. Mind you, I have been using non-OEM parts but don't have anything else to try against those parts for right now.

Cust brought in phone with broken digitizer. LCD was fine. Back housing shattered too. LCI triggered on charge dock but no signs of damage or corrosion, even in charge dock.

Swapped cust housings front and back with non-OEM part. (have NOT had issues with these parts in previous repairs, but it could be an issue).

Tested digitizer, worked fine.

Tested back camera, worked fine.

DID NOT check front camera at this time.

Cust took phone and called the next day with part of digitizer not responsive half of the time and also camera frozen on shutter.

My next steps,

Replaced digitizer with another part (from the same shipment)

Checked front and back cameras connections to logic board.

Powered up iPhone, checked back camera, working.

Pushed swap camera button to go to the front-facing, screen freezes and dims then eventually goes to shutter and waits til time-out.

Reset all settings, back camera works until pressing front-facing swap.

Same result.

Cleaned connectors with bristles moistened with denatured alcohol. Checked for bends or defects in the connectors of front camera.

Checked hopper (pics in previous posts) and it is still intact.

Replaced back camera, still freezing and either dim or shutter until reset settings. Also found, using power and home until restart performs the same temp fix.

I don't have a front facing camera to experiment with and I am wary of taking the cables off any more in case they are becoming fragile from my pestering the last two days.

Apple Genius Bar is not an option as we are 4 hours from any.

Any guidance or help is much appreciated. If you need to reach me directly please email cgibsonw4l@gmail.com

I have done this repair a dozen times and even if the jumper appears in tact it can still be damaged. Brush off the jumper and use a circuit pen to reconnect it. Should work. If it doesn't it is something with the logic board. This issue cannot be caused by non-OEM parts. If anybody tells you otherwise that is bogus.

Reading from other sources and now from personal experience, it turns out that if the front camera is somehow malfunctioning it will also take down the rear one, shutter and vice versa. As a solution I'd simply suggest purchasing a few front and rear cameras and make them part of your replacement process when you do have these failures. The two cameras can be bought for under $3 each. though it sounds like a lot to a regular business, at least it stops you building up a lousy reputation.

Later.

For the sound issue, it sounds like you have torn the loud speaker cable. It is a very common issue when doing a screen repair on the iPod 4G. As far as the camera is concerned, you may have unplugged the camera during the repair or the camera could have been damaged. I have not heard of or experienced the shutter issue on the iPod, I've only seen it on the iPhone.

That component was missing on my logic board. It probobly got knocked off when I did an lcd change. Since then, the camera shutter would freeze, and I could only use the camera from within a texting app, but it would freeze again if I tried to switch to the front camera.

I made the jumper with a circuit-writer pen, and both cameras are working like normal again.

I recently changed my iPhone 4's LCD + screen and had the same problem but with rear (big) camera. It all works great (including front facing camera) except when I open camera app shutter stays closed until I press the button to change camera, then front facing camera image will appear.

On other posts I read talk about a small connector that easily falls off during reparation, I still got it. Another post suggested the two black prongs coming from the camera block were its power connectors, I noticed they were coated in black, which doesn't look very conductive...

I also bought a new rear camera and that wouldn't work either. The last thing I could think of was there being contamination in the connector that wouldn't let it contact so I proceeded with a delicate cleaning of all the connectors ant took the logic board back out to make sure there was nothing strange going on under there.

At this point I started thinking it might be a software related so I did a Settings reset: same, Full restore: same, tried third party apps: same.

What's the next step?

(This is not my first iDevice (iPods, iPhones, Macs) fix, but the first iPhone 4 with this problem. I am was very delicate during replacement (first unplug battery, plastic tools(as much as possible)... and am sure all is in its place.)

For the verizon iphone 4, mines was doing the same for about a month before i got tired of it being broken and came on here to look for an answer, since there was no post on how to fix or locate the issue on the iphone 4 cdma version, i just looked around for any exposed metal that looked like there should be some sort of resistor or capacitor on and took to testing, finally found the culprit after many hard resets and soft resets and wiping the phone disassembly and re-assembly, anyways:

for iPhone 4 CDMA version, the one i found that prevented the camera from working (shutter stuck) is a small resistor on the mobo, location of it is at the end of the camera's connection ribbon. If you lift the ribbon connector up you will see a straight row of tiny 3 capacitors, I didnt even fixed mines permanantly yet, but the way i fixed it work so im keeping it that way until it stops then ill go and solder it in.

I just cut one strand of speaker wire copper, about 1 milimeter, and folded that in half, set it where the missing capacitor is and put a peice of tape on it (very small strip) then rolled up a small peice of cotton to provide pressure once you snap the camera ribbon connector on top, it will firmly hold it in place.

Hey its ghetto, but I've gone a long time without it, and now its working. all from things i found around my office.

I replaced my screen a few months back and both cameras were working perfect before and after, Few months passed and my front screen shattered everywhere including on top of the front camera which appeared foggy after it cracked. After I was messing with it and dug a piece out of the front top where the camera was it worked back to normal, which I should of thought dust and other things went inside of it so I took part of a paper clip or sharp pointy objects and kept digging in to it until it got cleared up. I made it worse and it completely was broken and needed to be replaced from many times digging in to it. Soon snapchat the app and my regular camera part it wouldn't let me select the front camera, it wasn't a option for me to select what's so ever. Went online bought a new camera and screens. After replacing them all once I got them, It still doesn't work? what is the deal what do I need to do to fix this problem?

Hello, this happened to me. Problem is those tiny resistors or caps next to connector. They are broken or lost solder connection when you install the cable back on. If you accidentally sit the camera cable wrongly too close to the cam, you will push the connector againts the tiny caps there. On my repaired phone one of these caps was totally lost or only connected with other end and twisted 180 degrees.

Most likely one of those tiny caps right next to the camera connector causes all your issues. It is very easy to break while sitting the camera cable on it's place.

Here is image where I added solder: http://but.fi/36x

I had new glass put on a week ago could that affect the shutter?

Ive fixed a large number of iPhone 4's and this has happened only a few times to me also. I have yet to figure out the reason. I've tried replacement cameras, different screens, triple checking connections. It always seems to get stuck when you switch to the front camera. The downside to the preinstalled camera app is that if you switch to the front camera and the shutter gets stuck you cant seem to switch back. Go download camera+ or another camera app and unfortunately dont use the front camera...

I have had it too. It must be the screens actually I had two out of four. I tried everything I could including putting the screen on a phone that worked. No fix for front camera but I can tell you how to unlock it.

Go to setting/general/reset (scroll to bottom)/reset all settings.

It will ask for confirmation.

After I did this the back camera will worked, but if I try the front it locks up, this affects facetime as well.

Note this only changes settings like background, ringtones, etc. does not effect data and pretty quick to do.

I had this problem, I do repairs myself, i couldn't fix, took it to 2 other repair shops they couldn't fix it either, when I got it back the final time I took it apart again, blew it out and reseated it and suddenly it just started working again and has been fine ever since. My jumper was not missing so everyone was clueless... seemed like a fluke, don't know what caused it, and not sure how many times it was taken out and put back in but I'd guess at least 6/7 times, if your jumper isn't missing I'd just keep trying! It's a horribly frustrating problem if you're not missing the jumper and know your cameras are good

The camera needs to have the lens shield replaced from the prior screen or it will not work. The lens shield pushes the camera tight against the back steel retainer making contact with it and then the retainer makes contact with the bottom side of the board for grounding purposes. The fix without the camera lens shield is to wedge a small piece of metal between forcing/making contact with the metal retainer.
