Replacing GPU thermal paste

Is it possible to replace the paste on the GPU on the iMac Intel 17" Core Duo from early 2006? Or is it a thermal heat pad?

My GPU diode runs at around 53C idle, about 65C load, but I'd like it lower if possible.

Is the GPU heatsink the sort of rectangular shaped one with four black pegs on the top side of the motherboard underneath the display?

Thanks.

Yes, you can replace the paste, there is no pad. The logic board must be removed. You can also upgrade your processor to a Core 2 Duo 1.83 or 2.16 GHz to be able to use Lion OS next month. See this answer for more info" Core Duo CPU upgrade to Core 2 Duo CPU?

I don't think the heat-sink you speak of is the GPU. Suspect it is the North-bridge (or Mac equivalent)

THIS GUIDE will give the general idea on the thermal paste application.

Not sure about the location of the GPU on this board though. Mayer will probably know.
