Display Screen Electrical Connections

Attached is a picture of the display screen for a Brookstone clock. A ribbon cable was attached to the black pads shown in the picture apparently by either electrical conducting glue or something in the ribbon cable covering works as glue when heated? The second part of the question is I see not electrical leads from the pads into the screen. How does such a system work?
