Here is my answer as previously at Why cant I do a hard reset to the screen to unlock

"If you forgot the combination, the only way to unlock the iPod and enter a new one is to reset it to factory settings. This means that you will lose all your data on the iPod. To restore the iPod to factory settings you have to connect the iPod to its primary computer and select “Restore” from iTunes > Summary tab.

THIS WILL MAINTAIN YOUR DATA

Now I think if you are using windows you can also try to

1.Plug the iPod in computer.

2.Go to "My Computer" And click the apporiate drive your your iPod.

3.Change folder option to "View all hidden files and folders"

4.Go to ipod_control

5.Then to Device

6.You should see a file there named "_locked"

7.Open that up with a text editor (Notepad) and the passcode should be right in there.

or of course you could just rename the file to _unlocked

Close your text editor and eject iPod from computer

Good Luck

renaming the file to _unlocked works better than trying to check for the passcode within the file! :-)

What if I cannot connect to iTunes, or if I don't have a cable? I'm not interested in saving all the songs, I'm just interested in getting my iPod back, even if it is erased. Is there any way to reset it using the buttons and click wheel? Like a manual reset on the device itself instead of through another device? By the way I have model A1136, EMC No. 2065, 30GB, released in 2005 (I have it in white (Well, the back is silver))

If you encrypt an iPod backup on iTunes and then forget your password, you will not be able to restore from backup and your data will be unrecoverable. If you forget the password, you can continue to back up and use the device, however you will not be able to restore the encrypted backup to any device without the password. You do not need to enter the password for your backup each time you back up or sync. If you cannot remember the password and want to start again, you can use a SmartKey to unlock iTunes backup password at first.
