Second generation of iPhone. Model A1241 / 8 or 16 GB capacity / black or white plastic back. Repair is more straightforward than the first iPhone. requires screwdrivers, prying, and suction tools.

Why is my iPhone on mute every time I place a call?

Stepped on the front of the iphone, cracked screen/ digitizer. Phone still received calls and could hear callers perfectly, though they could not hear me at all. I replaced both screen and digitizer and every function on the phone works perfectly with the exception of the lingering problem of callers not being able to hear me. Now that I can see my screen it appears that when I either make or receive a call my phone is muting the call from the instant that the call connects. The mute button on the screen is always pressed (has the line through it). If i make a call and hold the phone away from my face the prox. sensor seems to be working OK as the screen stays lit, if i move the phone to my face screen goes dark. If I touch the mute button in an attempt to disengage mute the screen goes black. I know its not software as I reset everything updated to 4.2.1 and no luck, went back to 3.13, no luck. Back to 4.2.1 and no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have searched for days on every board and forum I can find and have found nothing. Thanks in advance.

do you have sounds when you touch keys? i'd take a look at the headphone jack.. it may have been damaged and is tricking your phone to think the headphones are connected hence the mute. have a look in the jack and see if there is any lint/dust and remove it, also try cleaning the port with a q-tip. you may find that when you trod on the phone you have pushed the mute switch out of it's groove. if all else fails open the phone and take a look at that part. let us know how you get on.

So when i place a call the mute key is active like I mentioed. I can push the speaker button and the call will go to speaker and I can hear the caller but mute is still pressed. When I press the keypad icon while on a call the keypad goes black instantly and stays muted. Motherboard? If so I dont mind repairing it myself, but is cost and labor worth it?

if it is just that the mute switch is out of it's groove then the cost is nil, I'd look at that first
