For future reference, it's typically never a good idea to force the zoom ring to move if it's stuck like that. What could happen, which happened in your case, was that you were putting a lot of strain on some internal component and it eventually got to the point where it just snapped.
Whenever you do need to zoom a lens in or out to get it to fit into a camera bag, make sure to only do so using the zoom ring. Avoid pushing or pulling on the lens to zoom. It can put extra strain on components or put strain on them in a way that they weren't design to handle.
As to your question of whether or not it's broken, it definitely is. The mechanical connection between the zoom ring and the internal zoom lens elements have been severed in some way, which is how the zoom ring still turns fine while not actually effecting the zoom. The noise you here in the lens is most likely a screw or broken piece(s) of plastic. To know exactly what broke inside it, the lens would just have to be disassembled and examined.
