AC Adapter is making a clicking noise?

The AC adapter for my laptop has been making a clicking noise for some time now. This is actually the second adapter I have had with this laptop and the first one made the same sound and failed within a year.

Is this just bad design on Dell's part, or could there be some way I am using/storing it that could be harming it?

This is just a sign of a short in the adapter. There may have been a production flaw in the adapter brand you're using, I would try a different brand. It could also be caused by voltage spikes using older house wiring.

There is a click noise the moment you connect it to the grid. I've got a Dell Inspiron and for years I used different adapters (at different Places). My impression: They all got this first click sound.
