Startup problem: grey screen

One morning I tried to startup my Powerbook G4:

I had used "startup sound control", but this time i heard the startup sound and knew this was a bad sign.

When I plug in the power adapter, the light is green at first an then goes orange.

As I tried to start, I heard the sound of ejecting the CD (as usual)

Then the startup sound, and then the screen goes grey...

then nothing more happened...

(by the way, the fan is working...)

I tried to:

- reset pram

- reset vram

- start from startup disc (apple came on the sreen, then the turning wheel, but then the wheel froze and nothing happened anymore..., the same with the hardware check...)

- startup in firewire target mode, single user mode...

- startup in open firmware, worked, but I didn't know what to do there... = )

Thanks for your help!!!

Boot up from your system installation disk (hold down the "C" key with your DVD inserted, go to the second page pull down menu to Utilities -> Disk Utility and see if the drive can be repaired. If no drive shows up, you'll need to replace it.

If it won't start from the original system disk, you'll have to experiment some. Disconnect the hard drive and try starting only from the DVD. Pull both RAM sticks and insert just one, try it in both slots. Next do the other stick.

thank you!

as I disconnected the hard drive, the computer booted successfully from the system installation cd.

but honestly, I don't know what to do now...

shall I replace the hard disc??

I replaced half a year ago...

Well if it doesn't start with the hard drive connected and does start when it's disconnected, this is a no brainer. Replace the hard drive.

I already tried to boot from the system installation disk, but the screen froze, when the turning wheel indicated, that the system was starting...

anyway, I replaced the hard disk half a year ago...

(I put in a new one from the apple shop, because the other one was broken...)

Try it again, EXACTLY the way I stated. If it won't start this way, you're in trouble. Is this the original system installation disk or a retail disk?
