The Dell Inspiron 11-3147 is an 11" laptop-and-tablet hybrid device. The screen can fold onto its back to allow for handheld usage. It was manufactured in August 2015 by Dell.

Do you think I can safely try to install 8GB of RAM into this laptop?

Hello everyone, I have read somewhere that Dell purposefully reprogrammed their BIOS so that they could set limits on any upgrades their customers could install. I won't be buying Dell or any other manufacturer that limits my ability to upgrade.

Anyway, on the official Dell website they say my laptop only supports 4GB max. But on a different website it says that my processor supports an 8GB max. Then on another website a user posted that they were able to install an 8GB upgrade.

So what do you thing? Should I just buy the RAM and try to install it? Or will I destroy my hardware poking around in there?

I shouldn't have said that I won't be buying Dell. I bought another Dell because it beat the price of the competitors. I made sure I have plenty of RAM so I can do my work.

Hi @abraham_luna

Dell might state that it supports only 4GB for stability reasons. I don't know.

As long as you don't exceed the speed (1333MHz ) and ensure that it is DDR3L then you should be OK, barring accidents when you install it that is. Try a 8GB SODIMM stick and see if it works.

Here are the memory specifications for your laptop (as you most probably already know)

Memory:

Slot : One SODIMM slot

Type: DDR3L

Speed: 1333 MHz

Configurations supported: 4 GB

Here is a link to the service manual for your laptop. Scroll to p.17 to view the necessary pre-requisite steps and then the procedure to remove / replace the RAM

Thanks for your input. I replaced this laptop with a newer one last November and I have plenty of RAM.

Hi! I'm curious if you really have Dell Inspiron 11 3147? And what are the specifications of the 8GB RAM that you installed? Thank you!
