upgrade RAM in both slots required?

Do I have to upgrade the RAM in both slots of my mid-2012 13" MacBook Pro to the same capacity, or can I have a lower capacity (original 2GB or 4GB) chip in slot 1 and a higher capacity (8GB) chip in slot 2?

You can have different amounts of RAM per slot. It is gernerally advised to keep the ram the same, but it is not a requirement.

Hope this helps.

You can mix then as long as they are the same speed. You loose interleaving but the RAM increase more than makes up for it.
