Try using the HP SMART. HDD diagnostic software found in the BIOS setup area, to test if the HDD is OK.
As @slagle stated it sounds as though the HDD is failing or has failed.
If it has failed, you cannot repair it, you can only replace it. Hopefully you have backups of your data.

Have you done the diagnostics on the HDD? You haven't said. You really should try it
Download this (select Ver. 7.5 Windows Free Edition) to a USB and boot the PC from the USB to test RAM. If PC boots OK and tests pass then RAM is not the problem.
