What is this flex cable attached to the battery chipset?

Im trying to look over a water damaged MacBook Pro w/ Touch Bar. I accidentally snapped of a flex-cable that seems to be attached to the battery chipset.

iFixit's breakdown YouTube video of the Late 2016 Touch Bar shows a clear picture of it:

Anyone knows what it is and does? Is it needed for the laptop to start?

Just to troubleshoot, do I need it? (The battery is probably gone anyway).

Also, Does the MacBook Pro w/Touch Bar start without a battery? (USB-C charger connected).

I can see that one USB-C module is fried (right one). Left one seems OK. Does it start with one side unplugged? I can see the part as replacement in the ifixit store. Great if I get the machine running again. :)

Battery specification: 020-01705 / A1819

Anyone? Thank you in advance!

Please post a couple of images one that shows the damage clearly (tight shot) and a second showing enough area so we can reference what you are talking about. Adding images to an existing question

Dan: Thanks for you quick answer. I've now attached some more clear picture captured from iFixits breakdown video as well.

Ouch!! Sadly this is the SMC circuit connection to the logic board. Your battery won't charge without the connection. I'm not sure if the battery will even run your system as some of the SMC circuitry that was on the logic board is now on the battery in this series.

Time for a new battery in any case.

Thanks for you answer.

$@$* happens, but I guess since the laptop was drowned in coffee and shorted I guess there is a big chance the battery is bad anyway.

Do you know if I need the battery in order to start the machine? (I don't have a charger yet so I can't try).

Give it a try ;-}

I'm sure it won't work without the power adapter.

I did the same thing and Mac works fine with USB power. It just thinks it doesn't have a battery.
