Fuel guage is not working

The fuel gauge on my 2006 Toyota Tundra shows a quarter tank left when it is actually out of gas. What causes that.

It could be an earth issue. Check all your earth connections around and near your fuel tank, as they may be corroded or not getting a good connection. Also could be that your sender unit is faulty.
