Constant white screen but able to login

Hi all,

My MacBook is displaying nothing but a white screen. I somehow was able to login to the computer. I know this because I was able to play music using the multimedia keys. I've tried resetting nvram, smc, command + r and followed all other guides which tackle the white screen problem. But none of the guides have helped me fix my issue. I can see black smudges on my screen sometimes. I booted with command + r, and I could see a greyish window (looked like a rectangular black smudge). I'm guessing that was the window which shows recovery options (reinstall etc). So I can confirm that my hard disk is booting up fine. What might be the problem?

Hi Teja,

Do you have an external display you could try to test with? I would hook your MBP up to an external display and boot it up, if you see your computer working normally then you may have a bad display. If you get the same results on the external display then it could be your graphics card, which is unfortunately soldered to your logic board.

I was planning on doing this. Will do it later and then let you know.

Just connected my MacBook to an external display, and everything seems to be working fine on the external display. The black smudgy rectangular window that I was talking isn't actually a window. Don't know what it is. Should I replace the display?

How much would it cost?

Hey Teja,

The price varies on what condition you buy.

If the external monitor works fine, I would test it for an extended period of time before making the purchase, a couple hours or overnight just to make sure it still is fine on the external. Lastly I would try to do the SMC and PRAM reset a couple more times, if still nothing works you should replace the display!
