The B6 and B7 versions of the Volkswagen Passat are front-engine large family cars produced by Volkswagen, a German automaker. The B6 line of the Passat was produced between 2005 and 2010, and the B7 line was produced between 2010 and 2015 as a facelift of the B6 line.

What specifically does the yellow engine light mean?

The yellow engine light came on and my manual simply states to get it to a Volkswagen dealer. How serious is this...what are the possibilities? I live 1.5 hours from the nearest possible technician.

Update (12/03/2017)

Tysvm. I do not have a obd and cannot have one until the 11th(I'm very rural)... I'm wondering if it's safe to drive until then. I drive 80 mi a day for work.

Again, ty for that suggestion!!

As @mayer asked, what's your current mileage? At what previous mileage did you get an oil change?

Dee, if you are in the United States, most auto parts stores will give you a read of your engine codes for free. The yellow engine light normally means oil change is due, but like @captainsnowball stated, it could mean something more dramatic.

@avanteguarde I thought they will only give the codes in MA because it is a state law. (Source: that thing on iFixit that pops up and says: "protect your right to repair" But, probably not the most informative source on that matter.) and also, isn't an oil change needed represented by a little oil applier thing?
